How Prescription Transfers Work
- Submit Your Transfer Request: Start by completing our transfer form online, calling the St. Hope Pharmacy location you want to use, or visiting one of our health centers in person. Provide your basic details and the information about your current pharmacy.
- We Will Contact Your Old Pharmacy: Once your request is received, our pharmacy will reach out to your current pharmacy to request your prescription details, including medication name, dosage and remaining refills.
- Prescription Information Is Verified: Our pharmacists will review your prescription to confirm accuracy, check refill eligibility and ensure there are no issues such as expired prescriptions or restrictions.
- Your Doctor May Be Contacted (If Needed): If your prescription has no remaining refills or requires authorization, we may contact your healthcare provider for approval.
- Your Medication Is Processed: Once everything is verified, your prescription is entered into our system and prepared for filling.
- Insurance Is Applied: Your insurance information is processed to determine coverage and any out-of-pocket costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to transfer a prescription?
Most transfers are completed within 24–48 hours, though timing can vary depending on your current pharmacy and whether refills are available.
How long after transferring can I pick up my medication?
In many cases, you can pick up your medication the same day or within 1–2 days after the transfer is completed. You’ll be notified when it’s ready.
Do I need to contact my old pharmacy?
No. Our pharmacists will typically handle the transfer for you by contacting your previous pharmacy directly.
Can all prescriptions be transferred?
Most prescriptions can be transferred, but there are some important exceptions. In Texas, Schedule II controlled substances, such as certain pain medications like oxycodone and hydrocodone, as well as stimulant medications such as Adderall, cannot be transferred between pharmacies and require a new prescription from your provider.
Schedule III–V drugs may be transferable, but are generally limited to a single transfer if refills remain.
Contact us if you’re unsure whether your prescription can be transferred. St. Hope Pharmacy can still fill these medications, but a new prescription from your provider will be required.
What if I don’t have refills left?
If your prescription has no refills remaining, we can contact your doctor to request a new prescription.
Can I transfer multiple prescriptions at once?
Yes. You can usually request to transfer all your medications or select specific ones.
Will my insurance still work?
As long as we accept your insurance plan, your coverage should continue. St. Hope Pharmacy accepts a wide range of plans, including:
- Humana
- United Healthcare
- Blue Cross Blue Shield
- Aetna
- Cigna
- Tricare
- Express Scripts
- Caremark
- Molina
- Amerigroup
Not all St. Hope Pharmacy locations are enrolled in every plan, so it’s important to contact your preferred location to confirm participation before transferring your prescription.
Is there a cost to transfer a prescription?
No, transferring prescriptions is typically free.
Can I transfer prescriptions between different pharmacy chains?
Yes. Transfers can be completed between most pharmacies, including different chains and independent locations.
What happens if there’s an issue with my transfer?
If there’s a delay or missing information, we will contact you to resolve the issue and keep the process moving.
